Types of Fire Sprinkler Systems



Fire sprinkler systems are an essential safety mechanism in every building. A fire sprinkler system could keep fires under control until the fire fighting brigade arrives thereby reducing the damage done to property. Fire sprinkler systems also help fire fighters put out fires more quickly and efficiently. 
Fire sprinkler systems have smoke and gas detection systems and also have control valves that supply water when smoke or gas is detected and shuts down after the fire is controlled. The four most commonly used types of fire sprinkler systems are pre-action, dry pipe, wet pipe and deluge.

Pre-Action Fire Sprinkler Systems:


The use of fire sprinkler systems is a double edged sword it could save property from being damaged by fire but could also cause damage to property with water.  A pre action fire sprinkler system helps minimize the damage caused to property when the fire sprinkler system is activated and water is released.  if a fire breaks out in a room in a building, the pre action trigger that is installed in the pipe segment that enters that room is activated  and water is released only in that room where the fire broke out. The triggers in the pipe segments that lead to the other rooms are not activated and water is not released in other rooms. Thereby reducing the damage caused by water in the other rooms. A pre action fire sprinkler system is ideal for use in libraries, or places that have appliances such as computers that could be destroyed with water.

Dry Pipe Systems:


In this system the water is not stored in the pipes but in the supply tank. The pipes connecting the supply tank and the sprinkler head is filled with pressurized air that escapes when the sprinkler head bursts when a fire breaks out and then the water is released through the sprinkler.  The advantage of the dry pipe system is that since there is no water in the pipe, there is no chance of the water freezing in the pipe.  Therefore, the dry pipe fire sprinkler systems are ideal for applications in low temperatures and in places such as parking garages, cold storages, grocery stores and refrigerated areas where there is no heat.

Wet Pipe Systems:


The wet pipe system is one of the most reliable types of fire sprinkler system. In this system, water is constantly in the pipe and when the heat detecting glass bulb on the sprinkler head bursts as a result of the fire, water is dispersed from the sprinkler immediately.  The wet pipe system has the fastest reaction time when compared to other types of fire sprinkler systems.


This type of sprinkler system is ideal for conditions where the temperature is above freezing level. Since water is always in the pipe there is a chance that the water may freeze and render the system ineffective in the event of a fire. When the water in the pipes freezes it could also cause the pipe to crack and leak.

Deluge Fire Sprinkler System:


A deluge fire sprinkler system does not have a sprinkler head that heads to open or a glass bulb that needs to burst in the event of a fire. The sprinkler is always in an open state. When the system is triggered water floods the place aggressively and puts out the fire. A deluge fire sprinkler system is suitable for places that store hazardous or flammable liquids, chemical plants and so on.
